Cherry Creek School District
Ballot Issues 4A & 4B

Who Put This on the Ballot: Placed on the ballot by the Cherry Creek School District Board of Education (CCSD).

How I Am Voting and Why: 4A: The State of Colorado has inadequately funded school since 1989 when the budget stabilization factor (BS Factor) was created, this year we were so proud in the State Legislature to tout the victory that we finally paid off the BS Factor. And we said words like "fully funded schools"... what we weren't saying was fully funded to 1989 levels when the BS Factor was created. Colorado ranks 35th in the nation for public education funding. I am biased when our Cherry Creek School District asks for something given how well they have managed the district and maintained an impeccable school district in this State against all odds.

Since taking office, I have continually tested the management of Cherry Creek School District and I firmly believe them when they tell me that they need more money to protect our kids, and I think they are being conservative with the amount that they are asking for in 4A. We need to do this.

4B: Anyone who has attended Cherry Creek High School ever since the 1950s has attended classes in the exact same classrooms. The building is old, built like a prison, and not at all conducive to the modern needs of public education. The significant cost to retrofit these buildings with things like internet, air conditioning, security features, etc has now passed effectiveness for the cost of maintaining these aged facilities. There are numerous classrooms that are unusable due to dilapidations in the building, and yet somehow the teachers and administrators still make do.

Here's the thing, we are at a point where there is not another solution but to begin to rebuild these facilities. If we don't pass this measure this year, and get contracts started for this work, the next year they will have to ask us for more money as costs rise. Their ask is not a matter of do we have to do this (we do), but when. If we fail to approve this this year, the circumstances will not change, and we will be asked again next year.

I recommend to anyone that has a legitimate concern about this need to schedule a visit at Cherry Creek High School and see for yourself. It's time.
